Be Still and Know God’s Purpose

In this modern world we live in we often hear the clarion call of “Don’t just stand there – DO SOMETHING”. However, my recent studies have revealed to me that is often not the case when it comes to our spiritual life.

Too often, whether we want to believe it or not, we act as though our mighty God ‘needs’ our help. It’s as if we do a strong arm wrestling match with Him for control over events and areas of our life. Areas and events that we may have already uttered the prayer of “God, Your will be done.” So, we will make a proud statement and proclaim, “I think this is what God wants to happen, so I’ll work and DO to make it happen.”

Somewhere, lurking in the back of our mind is the quote “God helps those who help themselves”. We quote it as though it’s a famous verse from the Bible. Guess what? It’s not.

I find comfort in the verse that is actually in the Bible and is opposite of the famous quote. God’s word tells us in Psalm 46:10 “Be still, and know that I am God.” We actually are permitted to be still when we are in doubt. If we don’t have a clear direction, we should be still. Be still and give God time to give us clear direction when the timing is right.

While we seek to do God’s will at this stage in our life, we must not forget the basic call to action which is to not act, but to be still. When we are quiet before him, with humbleness of spirit and seeking his direction, we put ourselves at the most teachable position.

“Are you too busy trying to keep up with God? Lay down your efforts and simply become quiet. What you discover in the stillness may revolutionize your call to Christian service.”
