Have you been walking by safe and not by faith?
In our Wednesday night Bible study, the teacher, Chad, made a statement referring the scripture, Psalm 119:105 that got me to thinking.
We’ve all read the scripture. Probably even memorized a time or two
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path”
Light. You know….Those lights of old time aren’t like the high powered LED flashlights we have now. I have a little one that I used last night and it lit up the entire backyard. The old lights of Bible days were literally lights that only shone immediately around you. You could see your feet. And the next few steps, then that was it. To see further you had to take a next step.
It was the same way tho, with my flashlight last night… I couldn’t see beyond the chain link fence. I needed to move closer with my light if I wanted to see further. For my “now” last night I just needed to see the pathway, and make sure there wasn’t a skunk in my path lol.
But. Here’s the thing. God gives us what we need for our now. When we are studying his word and leaning on him, his word is a light for our path for the now. If we want to see further though, we have to move.
Moving and Growing
More than moving…We have to grow.
I know. I know. Change is hard. No one likes change except a wet baby.
For instance, how many times in our Christian walk do we “say” we want more faith? But what are we doing to “move” our faith or grow it? Growth doesn’t stay stagnant. It doesn’t stay the same size. It morphs and changes. It has to. I can’t think of one seed that stays the same and still produces fruit. It has to go through a process of growth, and change.
So how do we apply this? For instance it’s easy to study every book on prayer. But the way you grow your prayer life is to actively and fervently pray.
You want to grow your prayer life? Move out of the easy prayers such as “Thank you for our blessings and thank you for this food.”
Start praying big, bold prayers. Move out of safety zone.
You can study every scripture and book on love and kindness. But you want to grow that fruit? Then you have to move your feet and take action. Move out of the safety zone.
You can’t grow while staying firmly planted and not changing your environment (figuratively and literally speaking.)
So, as we head into this weekend of college football games, and you hear an announcer say something about “the safety zone”…
Let that act as a prayer prompt…
“Lord, is it time for me to move out of my safety zone?”
