REST in God's Presence

What does it mean to be still before God?

Life can feel so busy. There are always things to do—chores, work, errands, and responsibilities. Our minds can fill up with thoughts about what’s next, making it hard to slow down. But God invites us to pause, breathe, and rest in Him. In Psalm 46:10, God says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” But what does it really mean to be still before God? And how can journaling help?

I have a dear friend who recently shared a podcast with me related to this topic. In this podcast the hosts, who happen to be three nuns, share reflections on a book they’re reading. The book’s topic is also about rest and leisure. The bottom line is that rest and leisure are designed by God to benefit us. So, let’s investigate.

Being Still Means Listening

When we take time to be still, we make space to hear from God. He may not speak in a loud voice, but He can guide us through His Word, through prayer, or through a sense of peace in our hearts. When we journal, we can write down what we feel God is teaching us. Sometimes, writing helps us slow down and notice things we might otherwise miss.

Being Still Means Letting Go of Distractions

It’s easy to get distracted. Phones, TVs, and busy schedules can keep our minds racing. Being still before God means stepping away from distractions, even for a little while. Maybe it’s finding a quiet place, turning off the noise, and opening your journal. Writing out your thoughts, prayers, and reflections can help you focus on God’s presence.

Being Still Means Trusting God

Being still before God isn’t just about sitting quietly. It’s about trusting Him completely. Sometimes, we try to figure everything out on our own. We worry about the future or stress over things we can’t control. But when we are still before God, we remind ourselves that He is in charge. We can rest in His love and hope, knowing He has a plan for us.

How Journaling Can Help You Be Still

Journaling is a wonderful way to practice being still before God. It allows you to:

  • Reflect on Scripture and what it means for your life.
  • Express your worries and give them to God.
  • See how God is working in your heart.
  • Thank Him for the blessings He has given you.

You don’t need fancy supplies or perfect handwriting. A simple notebook and a willing heart are enough. There’s no right or wrong way to journal—just start where you are.

A Simple Encouragement

God invites you to be still, not because He wants to take something away from you, but because He wants to give you peace. When we slow down, breathe, and focus on Him, we can find rest for our weary souls.

As you begin your journaling practice, remember: God sees you, hears you, and loves you. He is always near, waiting to meet you in the quiet moments. Take time today to be still before Him, even if it’s just for a few minutes. You may be surprised at what He shows you.
