The 5 J’s: A Simple Method for Journaling Your Way Closer to Jesus

Have you ever sat down with your Bible and journal, pen in hand, and just… stopped? You truly want to dig deeper into the scriptures. You want your quiet time to feel less like a box to check and more like an actual meaningful conversation with God. But without some kind of structure, it’s easy to read a few verses, jot down “that was nice,” and close the cover feeling a little empty and like you missed something.

Sister, I’ve been there more times than I can count. And over the years of leading Bible studies, walking alongside women in the Journal to Jesus community, and building out journaling resources, I kept coming back to the same five movements. It was the same rhythm. Thankfully, it took my time in the Word from surface-level to a meaningful soul-level.

I finally gave that rhythm a name: The 5 J’s.

It’s the framework behind everything we do here at Journal to Jesus, and today I want to walk you through exactly what it is and how you can start using it in your own quiet time. Starting today, with whatever Bible and notebook you already have on your nightstand your can use the 5 J’s.

Why You Need a Framework in the First Place

Here’s the thing about journaling through Scripture: it’s not that you don’t have anything to say. It’s that without a starting point, the blank page feels heavier and harder than it should.

A framework isn’t about turning your time with God into a formula. It’s a doorway. It gives you somewhere to start so the Holy Spirit has room to work once you’re actually sitting still long enough to listen. Think of it less like a rule book and more like a trailhead. The framework points you in a direction, and then the journey is completely up to you.

That’s exactly what the 5 J’s are meant to do.

The 5 J’s: Journal to Jesus Method

1. Journey In

Before you read a single verse, journey inward. Close your phone, find a quiet corner, and simply pause. This is the moment where you set aside the noise of the day and invite God into the space.

You might whisper something as simple as, “Lord, quiet my heart and open my ears.” That’s it. You’re not performing. You’re setting aside your time to arrive and be with Jesus.

2. Just Read

Now open your Bible and read the full passage for the day, start to finish, without stopping to analyze every phrase. Let the whole picture wash over you first. Who is speaking? Who are they speaking to? What’s happening in the story?

This step is about taking in the forest before you start examining the trees.

Kim’s Hint: Don’t read with a pen, pencil, or highlighter in your hand. Just read.

3. Jot Down

As you read, one verse will usually rise to the surface. It’s the line that stings a little, comforts you, or simply won’t let you move on. That’s your focus verse. It’s the one you write or underline after you finished reading.

Write it down at the top of your journal page. This single verse becomes the anchor for everything else you do in this sitting.

4. Journal It

This is the heart of the Journal to Jesus method, and it’s where the real transformation happens. Sit with your focus verse and ask it some questions:

  • What does this reveal about who God is?
  • What does this reveal about who I am?
  • Is there a promise here to hold onto, or a command here to obey?
  • How does this apply to what I’m walking through this week?

This is exactly the kind of digging my 30 Scripture journal prompts freebie is designed to walk you through if you want some guided questions to get you started.

5. Just Pray

Finally, turn everything you just wrote into a conversation. Pray the verse back to God. Ask Him to help you actually live out what you just uncovered. It’s not just about understanding it, but carrying it into your day.

This is the step that turns Bible study from a bookish exercise into genuine spiritual growth. Journaling gets it out of your head. Prayer gets it into your life.

Putting It All Together

Here’s the whole rhythm in one glance:

Journey In → Quiet your heart before God. Just Read → Take in the full passage. Jot Down → Choose your focus verse. Journal It → Dig into what it means and how it applies. Just Pray → Turn it into a conversation with God.

Five steps. One rhythm. A lifetime of deepening your walk with Jesus, one page at a time.
