Speak Life, Devotion 3
I am reminded today of a scripture found in the book of Matthew 15:11. “It is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth; this defiles a person”
At this time when the words were written, it defied everything about the church law at the time. There was a litany of food and drink that was forbidden to be consumed.
Even Peter at one time in the scriptures boasted that he didn’t eat anything that was unclean. Even those so close to Christ still couldn’t understand that true purity was inward and not outward. It was spiritual and not a physical quality.
Speak Life – Our Words can be words of hope or words of despair
What comes out of our mouths is the essence of who we are. They can either be words of hope or words that invite despair.
Do you have the “yes” face? Do you have the face and demeanor that inspires hope to others? The face that invites a person to talk to you? Words that lift up rather than break down?
Remember the parable of the good Samaritan? He was on the road and stumbled upon someone injured. Two other religious men had passed him by, offering words of excuses and denial. But the Samaritan had the ‘Yes’ face. He tended to his wounds, took him to a safe place and paid in advance for his care until he was well.
It was the Samaritan’s words of care and concern that gave life.
I think about my own self. Not so much the words that I say to others. But the words that I say to myself. Have you had times where you were defeated before you even started a task? Maybe it was learning a new skill or a new hobby. Before you even take the task to hand, you may have been saying “I’m too old to learn this.” Negative words that are defiling your own spirit.
Make it point today to speak only uplifting words about yourself. Others also. But mainly yourself. No negativity.
