Living a multi-generational faith by sharing your testimony of the goodness of God in your life
Looking at the story of the history of the Scriptures, we see a multi-generational faith. One generation testified to the goodness of God and the truth of the gospel, another generation heard the good news. It happened then, and it happens now.
When I was younger, there was a dear little saint in our church. Oh, she was a spitfire. I remember the day my dad came home, and he told my mom he had rescued her off the roof of her tiny one-bedroom house. Her house was at the beginning of our not-well-traveled street. She was in her mid-70s. Truthfully, when I was a teenager, that age seemed so old, but now, not so much. Unknowing to her children or grandchildren, he had gone up the ladder to fix a shingle. Unfortunately, her ladder fell away from the house. She told my dad, “I knew someone would eventually drive by, so I didn’t worry. I just trusted Jesus. He’s never failed me, and he won’t fail me now.”
That was a similar statement I often heard her say during our Sunday night testimony services. It was a portion of our Sunday evening service when folks could stand up and share about the goodness of how they had felt God had shown up in their lives the past week or during a situation in their lives.
It never failed. Each Sunday, she stood up. Her little crocheted bonnet bobbed with her head as she proclaimed, “I want to stand up and say how much I love the Lord because I have so much to love and thank him for. Then, she would share about some event during her long-lived life. Her life included walking from Tennessee to Texas, following her parents behind the wagon, and marrying the love of her life at the early age of 15. Having kids, burying her husband and two of her boys after three separate auto accidents. But, no matter her testimony, she always ended by saying, “I started out with Jesus to go all the way, and that’s what I’ll do.”
Matthew Chapter 24 talks about the end times, the evil and lawlessness…but verse 13 gives us the promise, “But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
Sister Elliott endured to her end when she peacefully passed from her earthly stay to her heavenly home. And I am forever grateful for her testimony of God’s goodness in her life. I can find comfort that God helped her through pains and sadness, and even getting stuck on the roof.
In closing, I leave you with two thoughts. First, I encourage you to share your stories and your testimonies of the goodness of God in your life. The younger generation needs our words…and your friends do, too.
Lastly, trust God fully. Even during the pain, darkness, and sadness. Lean into His promises that He will lead you through the dark valley to the other side.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.” (Psalm 23:4, KJV)
